The Sudou Maasa Timeline: 2004 - The Year of the Berryz

January 14, 2004 - Nakano Sun Plaza. The lives of 8 young girls are going to change. In a year, one of them will leave. 7 years after the remaining seven will go to a convention in Seattle. They will also be the first all-girl Japanese group to perform in Thailand. But all of that is in the future.

In a press conference, the eight members of Berryz Kobo were formed. None of them knew their name until they were in Nakano Sun Plaza. None of them knew if they were stay long in the group (the original idea was rotating members...which was probably shelved due to impracticality). Yet, for these eight little girls, the idea of finally debuting in a group of their own and not just any sub-group, is - to say the least - exciting.

The official debut of the group was March 3, 2004 and their first single was released. Anata Nashi de wa Ikite Yukenai had a total of only 15,315 sales (it's from J-Ongaku so it might not be accurate) and only peaked at number 18 (not to mention make their life a living hell due to the complicated dance routines).

Still, it's a start. And while the song itself wasn't ranked among my personal favorites, it is special because..well, because it IS the first.

Life didn't stop there. In April 28, 2004, another single was released.
Fighting Pose wa Date ja nai!

Yes, the single that was infamous for being Berryz Kobo's lowest  selling single to date. It was a nice little song, but the chorus was a little awkward for my ears.

I don't know if you've noticed, but Maasa's face was already changing at that time.

Three more singles were released that year. They were my favorite Piriri to Yukou! (released on May 26, 2004), Happiness ~Koufuku Kangei!~ (released on August 25, 2004) and Koi no Jubaku (released on November 10, 2004.

2004 was a busy, busy year. What comes next is a combination of excitement at releasing what will be their trademark song, and sadness as one friend leaves the group forever.

Let us leave 2004 with some parting shots......
